Zumba
Devotional for the body, mind and soul
Over the past few months, a
group of friends have been experimenting with ways to fuse their dual
passions for Zumba exercise and Bahá'í devotional gatherings. They have
combined the two activities into a full “body, mind and soul” workout,
which according to Negin Hatam, seems to have struck a chord with
neighbours who “are busy and trying to balance work and home life.”
They enjoy zumba exercise, which is based on dance, because it is
suitable for a range of ages and fitness levels. Also, says Hatam, the
music has universal appeal. In an typical evening, they spend about 30
minutes exercising to Zumba music and then they sit in a circle,
“wiping our sweat and enjoying a cup of green tea or filtered water.”
After this, there is a relaxing guided meditation accompanied by soft
music, and finally, some thought-provoking questions on a chosen topic,
which usually leads to some “hearty discussions,” says Hatam. Topics
have included universal love, mercy, healing and nutrition, service,
sacrifice, peace, and many more.
The group continues to meet each Tuesday at 6pm at the Ottawa Baha’i
Centre, 211 McArthur Av, and welcomes new members.
