The heart is a treasure, A gift beyond measure, A bounty from your Lord. Protect it from the fire Of worldly desire, And freely let it soar. Story: Aesop's fable the north wind and the sun THE WIND and the Sun were disputing which was the strongest. Suddenly they saw a traveller coming down the road, and the Sun said: I see a way to decide our dispute. Whichever of us can cause that traveller to take off his cloak shall be regarded as the stronger. You begin. So the Sun retired behind a cloud, and the Wind began to blow as hard as it could upon the traveller. But the harder he blew the more closely the traveller wrapped his cloak round him, till at last the Wind had to give up in despair. Then the Sun came out and shone in all his glory upon the traveller, who soon found it too hot to walk with his cloak on. Kindness has a greater effect than Force. Discuss: 1) Discuss kindness. Discuss how people feel when someone is being kind or unkind to them. 2) Play "Kind or Not-So-Kind". In this activity the students will be provided with a list of actions and will decide whether each action is kind or not so kind. As the teacher reads each action, the kids will show that the action is kind by running to the spot marked "Kind" and "not-so-kind" Examples (you can add more): -Your sister pushes you down in the backyard. -Your mom helps you with your homework. -Grandma sends you a birthday card. -You set the table without being asked. -Your brother calls you a mean name. -Your dad tells you that you look nice in your new clothes. -Your sister bumps into you and says she's sorry. -You make your uncle a get well card. -You break your baby brother's favorite toy. -Your sister pulls the dog's tail. -Your family invites a neighbor to dinner. *************************************************************** Activity: Review story about the birds from the last class. Review courtesy and relate it to kindness through the story. Craft: make bird masks to use in a skit based on the story. 1) Take a paper plate and draw two circles for the eyes. Cut the circles out. 2) Using the template, cut a triangle out of the yellow construction paper to make a beak. Fold the triangle in half. Unfold, then fold the corners in like you would to make a paper airplane. This will be the beak. Glue the back of the two folded corners, and press onto the paper plate below and between the two eyes. 3) Give each child four feathers: two white, and two colour. Glue along the top edge of the paper plate and stick the feathers on to the glue. [ note: this is a good opportunity for them to demonstrate courtesy and kindness to each other by sharing the materials, waiting their turn, and helping each other out. ] 4) Cut two holes, one on either side of the mask. Give each child two pipecleaners. They must put one pipecleaner through a hole approx. one inch, fold, then twist around the remaining length of the pipecleaner. Do the same on the other side. These will be used to tie the mask around their faces. 5) Encourage the children to decorate the masks using felt pens, stickers, etc. 6) Help them tie on the masks and get ready to play!
